This
Luxurious Estate is rich with architectural charm and history. The spectacular
and distinctive home has been restored in fine detail; even down to the
"Prohibition era hiding places." This home is only part of an eye catching
estate which includes an English style perennial garden plus a large three story
barn like building. The home and garden were included in "Gardens Adirondack
Style" by Janet Loughrey and "Them that has.." by Maureen Werther.
The garden, fountain, gazebo and surrounding acres have been the site of a
number of weddings. The
huge barn and acreage behind it could be developed into a splendid equestrian
facility.
This colonial home has 9,100 s/f of living
space and is very, very unique, indeed. The ballroom's original pull-down walls
are arranged to create a library and separate bedroom. The long center hallways
are a favorite of guests. During prohibition, the original owners created
special hiding places for their liquid reserves. The home boasts six original
wood burning fireplaces, plus four propane fireplaces and two original wood
burning antique stoves. Stair steps of American chestnut lead to a second floor
graced with fir, pine and hemlock. There is a private tavern featuring a
mahogany bar from the original Fifth Avenue Waldorf Astoria™ to entertain
friends. The bedrooms have western cedar walls and are all of generous size.
All the plumbing is designed to easily drain for the winter as most summer
estates were used seasonally. The kitchen has been modernized to today's
standards; has a nice sitting area with a Glenwood brand wood burning cook
stove, and original ringing stations. Currently being operated as the "Silver
Spruce Inn", the bedrooms are presented in first-class fashion with six generous
Astoria bathrooms. The 9+/- acre grounds include the house, the barn, the magnificent formal gardens and three maple trees. The property includes a separate treasured 3 acre water source; two 'forever wild surrounded' springs. Guests rave about the coffee and the owner smiles that it's all in the water! The home includes a 3-car heated garage and a new '05' high tech oil furnace. That portion of the home parallel to Route 9 was built in 1790 and included a tavern. In 1926 heiress Sally Miller Smith refurbished the 30 feet wide 1790 post and beam front section and extended the home 77 feet further west. It is in excellent shape under the caring hands of the current owners. Easy access from I-87. There is a large Carriage House (again with two upscale B&B bedrooms) three stories high - expand your business, store your antique cars, hobbies, or your gallery. Aside: We know Sally was a friend of Eleanor Roosevelt but we do not know if Mrs. Roosevelt ever visited this home.
Now is your chance to own one of the most unique historical homes in the Adirondack Park. Please feel free to enjoy their commercial B&B web site (click here). It is gorgeous! OFFERED at $879,000 * Located only 4 miles south of the newly planned state visitor's center at the Old Frontier Town. |
